About the "PILOT' Initiative | Pilot dates: May 18–September 18, 2026

 

BC Wings & Wires Incident Tracker is a developing citizen-science and wildlife reporting initiative focused on documenting bird injuries and fatalities associated with power infrastructure across British Columbia, Canada only (at this time).

 

While tools already exist for bird-window collisions, roadkill reporting, wildlife health reporting, and general bird observations, this initiative is being developed to fill a specific BC conservation data gap: standardized reporting of bird injuries and deaths linked to power lines, poles, wires, and related infrastructure.

 

By collecting community-based reports that include location data, species information, photos, and incident details, the project aims to identify collision and electrocution hotspots, support evidence-based mitigation, and help reduce preventable bird deaths across British Columbia.

This initiative is currently being launched as a Phase 1 pilot program running from May 18 to September 18, 2026. During this pilot period, the reporting form will be used to test the data collection process, gather early incident reports, and learn how wildlife rescue organizations, conservation groups, and community members can best contribute. At the end of the pilot, the tool and reporting process will be reviewed to determine next steps for future use, improvements, and potential expansion.

Who can submit a report?

Reports are welcome from wildlife rescue and rehabilitation organizations, conservation groups, birding and naturalist groups, wildlife photographers, and members of the public across British Columbia. Every report helps build a clearer picture of where birds may be impacted by power infrastructure.
